Three ways to get a taxi
"Taxi" in Addis usually means one of these.
Blue & white minibus
Shared, fixed route, cheapest way across town. Fits up to 12 people. Pay the conductor as you board or get off.
~10–65 ETB
Contract / blue taxi
A car to yourself — flag one down or find a stand. Fare is negotiated or metered before you go.
~60–350+ ETB
Ride-hailing app
Book from your phone (Ride, Feres, Yango…). Most predictable price, usually the priciest option.
~130+ ETB
Before you get in
Minibuses don't have route numbers — they have shouted destinations. Listen for yours, or ask "ወደ [destination] ነው?" (wede... new?) — "is this going to...?"
Carry small notes. Conductors often can't break a 100 or 200 birr bill.
At big terminals — Merkato, Piassa, Autobus Tera, Megenagna, Meskel Square — minibuses line up in bays by destination. Walk along the rows rather than guessing.
Rush hour (roughly 7–9am and 5–7pm) means longer waits and fuller vehicles.
Fares below are estimates. Ask the conductor to confirm before you board, especially after a fuel price change.
